Across Multiple Locations in Los Angeles
From October 23 through November 8th
In partnership with Maccarone Gallery, StandardVision will feature the first solo exhibition of LA-based artist Maggie West. Alongside the gallery’s virtual viewing room, West will exhibit vibrant images of geological specimens from her series MINERALS in public art installations throughout the city of Los Angeles. The images will be showcased on several of StandardVision’s large-scale digital media facades in order to create an exhibition format conducive to social distancing and further provide accessible public art outside the traditional gallery space.
The multi-screen exhibition will span across various neighborhoods throughout the city including Culver City, Koreatown, DTLA, and Glendale.
By using colored light in the photographs, the images in West’s series MINERALS are moved somewhere in between the realm of fantasy and documentation. The macro camera lens captures minute details within the specimens while the intense hue of the lighting obscures any natural coloration. The images serve a reminder of the enduring natural beauty present in the world around us. About the series, West remarks, “In this incredibly challenging time, I find serenity in my observations of the natural world. MINERALS celebrates the intricacies of each specimen and illuminates them with a spectrum of color.”
Maggie West is a Los Angeles-based photographer and installation artist. Her vibrant work explores a number of topics ranging from feminism and sexuality to the environment. West has created artwork and installations for institutions such as City of West Hollywood, Museum of Sex and the Smithsonian.
Maccarone Gallery was founded in 2001 by Michele Maccarone. The gallery’s mission has always been to champion emerging artists alongside historic figures, with a deep analysis of developing conceptual trends and historical patterns.
StandardVision is honored to be partnering with Maccarone Gallery and Maggie West in bringing this vibrant series to a wider public audience through this unique and dynamic viewing experience across the City of Los Angeles.
